Je ne m’étais pas fixé de buts pour mes projets de cadeaux de Noël cette année. J’ai plutôt essayé de commencer en début novembre et d’arrêté le 24 décembre n’importe où que je m’étais rendu. Pas de stress. Et ça a plus ou moins fonctionné!
I approached the Christmas crafting a bit differently this year. Rather than set a specific goal I decided to start knitting in early November and just take it one project at a time… Whatever I’d have finished by Christmas Eve I’d consider a success and I think that outlook kept each project light and fun rather than rushed.
J’ai complété une tuque de style marin pour mon beau frère, un magnifique patron de Deborah Newton intitulé Gansey Hat. J’ai utilisé le Merino Silk de Americo Originals, une laine qui ne me déçoit jamais. La seule modification que j’ai apporté au patron était d’allonger de rebord de quelques centimètres pour m’assurer que la tuque serait assez grande. Une décision judicieuse apparemment puisque la tuque me fait presque alors sinon elle aurait été trop petite pour mon beau frère qui me dépasse presque d’un mètre!
I knit my brother in law a mariner’s style hat, Deborah Newton’s excellent Gansey Hat pattern. I used my trusty worsted weight Americo Originals Merino Silk and lengthened the ribbed brim a few inches to increase the chances the hat would fit it’s recipient, who at probably WELL over a foot taller than me.
J’ai également tricoté une tuque Leta (avec pompon cette fois!) avec la Silky Wool d’Elsebeth Lavold ainsi qu’ un col aux couleurs correspondantes pour ma belle soeur. Le patron pour le col, “Soft as a Cloud Cowl” de Joelle Hoverson, est tiré d’un de mes livres préférés, More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. Je l’ai tricoté en tenant deux fils ensemble: un brin de Sundara Yarn Petite Sock et un brin de Debbie Bliss Angel.
I also knit a Leta tuque out of Elsbeth Lavold Silky Wool and added a contrasting pompom to match a Soft as a Cloud Cowl by Joelle Hoverson. I held a strand of Sundara Yarn Petite Sock together with a strand of Debbie Bliss Angel to add a bit of a soft halo effect. More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts is one of my favourite knitting books still, right up there with Melanie Falick’s Weekend knitting. I was pretty psyched to finally complete a project from it, all of the patterns would make such nice gifts.
J’ai tricoté des mitaines sans doigts pour le Monsieur, une demande précise qu’il m’avait fait en octobre. Le patron, Ivory Hawk Fingerless Gloves de Bronwyn MayB, est gratuit et c’est la deuxième fois que je le réalise tellement il est bien écrit et ajustable. Enveloppé avant que je puisse les prendre en photo pour les montrer terminés, j’ai demandé au Monsieur de m’envoyer une photo pendant sa randonnée en raquette au Parc de la Gatineau hier. Alors les voici le gardant bien au chaud en forêt!
I managed to finish a pair of fingerless mitts for the Mister, who’d specifically requested a green pair. The pattern, Ivory Hawk Fingerless Gloves by Bronwyn MayB, is free! Since I didn’t get a chance to photograph the completed mitts before having to wrap them, I asked the Mister to send me a snap of them the next time he wore them out. He obliged yesterday when I received this photo from his snowshoeing trek through Gatineau Park. In case you’re wondering, he held the phone with his teeth in order to get both mitts in the shot. I’m impressed (if slightly grossed out)!
Enfin, j’ai tenté de faire des bombes effervescentes pour le bain… et ça a été l’échec TOTAL. J’ai rempli mes moules avec le mélange, attendu environ une heure et les ai renversés sur une plaque à biscuits. À ce moment-là tout semblait bien fonctionner, j’avais 6 belles fleurs violettes qui ressemblaient beaucoup à celle dans la photo de gauche. Je suis allée me coucher et le lendemain matin c’est cette énorme masse spongieuse qui m’attendait. Je crois que mon erreur était d’avoir ajouté trop d’eau au mélange, activant l’effet effervescent... En tout cas j’ai bien rit! Puisque j’avais acheté beaucoup de fleurs de lavande séchées, j’ai décidé de broder des petits sacs pour les offrir en cadeau. Plutôt que des bains à la lavande ce seront des tiroirs parfumés.
And last but not least, I tried to make lavender bath bombs… and failed spectacularly. I filled my molds with my mixture, waited an hour before flipping it and leaving the 6 flower shapes (which at the time resembled the photo on the left) on the baking sheet to dry further overnight. That spongy blog on the right is what greeted me the next morning. Looks like I added too much water to the mixture, accidentally activating the fizzing process. Anyway, it gave me a laugh and a good dose of humility. Since I’d purchased a pound of dried lavender flowers I decided to embroider little pouches and offer the sachets as gifts instead. A fragrant drawer instead of a fragrant bath, I guess!
En ce début d’année j’aimerais vous remercier d’être passer par ici de temps en temps pour me lire en 2016. Je sais que je n'écris pas souvent, et surtout pas de manière prévisible. Je vous souhaite, avec énormément d'espoir, de santé, de bonheur et surtout de créativité, une belle et heureuse année 2017 !
